Objective
To orient incoming sociology graduate students to the department, the graduate program at Iowa State University, and campus resources available to graduate students.
Course Assignments
- Please come prepared to participate in class discussions.
- Students must attend all scheduled classes to pass the course. Please contact Dr. Sapp for excused absences.
- Students will read and be prepared to discuss the required Readings.
- Students will prepare a Curriculum Vitae.
- Students will successfully complete training in Discrimination and Harassment.
- Students will successfully complete online training in the Treatment of Human Subjects.
- The Department of Sociology will pay for a one-time only membership and any required journals, section dues, etc. the first year you are at ISU, to join either the American Sociological Association or the Rural Sociological Society. Deb McKay, Administrative Specialist for Sociology, will contact you by e-mail in December regarding this offer.

The Class Schedule describes assignments and activities for each week of the course.
Resource Materials
The Resources for Graduate Students web site describes requirements for graduate degrees, policies affecting graduate students, and graduate student organizations. Additionally, it provides links to centers and institutes of interest to sociology graduate students.
