Procedures for Earning a PhD Degree in the Department of Sociology
- Non-native English speakers must meet the Graduate English requirements.
- By the end of the second semester, choose a Major Professor to guide your degree program and supervise your thesis. This person must be a member of the Graduate Faculty in the Sociology Department.
- By the end of the second semester, complete the Committee Appointment Form, obtain all signatures, and submit it to the Graduate College for approval.
- By the end of the second semester, complete the The Program of Study Form, obtain all signatures, and submit to the Graduate College for approval. As you progress through your program, you might need to make changes to your POS form or committee. These changes might require a Committee Change Form, a POS Supplemental Form, or a POS Modification Form.
- By the end of the second semester, complete the PhD Concentration Area Declaration Form and submit it to Rachel Burlingame.
- Meet Ph.D Degree Requirements in the Department of Sociology.
- Establish date and time for the written Preliminary Examinations.
- After successfully passing both written Preliminary Examinations, submit a Request for Preliminary Oral Examination Form to the Sociology Department (See: Rachel Burlingame). This examination should be scheduled to occur within two weeks of notification of passing the written preliminary examinations.
- Successfully pass the Preliminary Oral Examination and on the same day submit the report form to the Graduate College.
- Obtain approval for the Research Proposal (See: Chair of your POS Committee).
- Complete your research and write your Dissertation.
- Review the Submission Deadlines for completing your degree requirements.
- File the Application for Graduation (Diploma Slip) with the Graduate College for intended graduation term. The Application for Graduation can be obtained from the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies secretary in 1137 Pearson Hall. This form needs to be submitted by the end of the first week of the semester in which the student expects to receive the degree, or by mid-May for graduation during summer term.
- Establish the date and time for the Final Oral Examination with your POS Committee.
- At least three weeks prior to the examination date, submit a Request for the Final Oral Examination to the Graduate College (See: Rachel Burlingame for this form).
- At least two weeks prior to the final examination date, provide the members of the POS Committee with a copy of the completed dissertation.
- Successfully pass the final oral examination. On the same day, submit the report form to the Sociology Department and the Graduate College.
- Obtain the Graduate Student Approval Slip for Graduation from the Graduate College (See: Rachel Burlingame).
- Review the Dissertation (Thesis) Checklist to make certain your thesis conforms with ISU guidelines.
- Submit the Dissertation (Thesis) Submission Form to the Graduate College.
- Bring a signed Graduate Student Approval Slip for Graduation to the Graduate College for final signatures.
- Attend Commencement Ceremonies.
