Renoir: Young Girl with a Hoop (detail), 1885. Assignment One

Introduction

This assignment provides experience in evaluating the theories and research designs of studies published in refereed journals. Identifying these aspects helps in understanding relationships between theory and methods. Also in this assignment, we want to learn how to identify potential ethical issues related to research. We want to learn how ethical issues are resolved so we can better conduct our research in an ethical manner.

The Instructions for the Written Assignments describe requirements and grading.

Special Second-Try Assignment: Given the difficulties observed in many papers for this first assignment, you are welcome to submit a second try at this assignment. Please select a topic different from the one you selected before (see: Instructions for the Written Assignments). Answer all questions below for each of the two articles in this section. Turn in a paper copy of this second try, along with your first paper, to Kristen Wenke on or prior to December 1.

Assignment

Complete these tasks for each of the two articles in your topic area:
  1. Was the study primarily deductive or inductive? Explain your answer. If a study tests one or more hypotheses, then it is, at least in part, deductive. If a study builds new theory, suggests new constructs not used before, then it is, at least in part, inductive.
  2. What was the unit of analysis for the study? This is the unit being investigated, such as the individual, a community, a prison system, etc.
  3. Did the study include measurements of indexes, scales, or both? Explain your answer. A scale or index is one construct, created from multiple questions. It is a combination of several questions.
    • If the study used scales or indexes, what procedures were used to assess the reliability of these measures? Typically, Cronbach's alpha is used to assess reliability. Look for a Greek letter alpha in the tables, or perhaps the phrase "(alpha = .xx)" within the text of the article.
  4. Describe the sampling procedures used in the study. What suggestions do you offer to improve the sampling procedure?
Due Date:

Please submit a paper copy of your assignment to Dr. Sapp on or prior to Tuesday, October 27th. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.
