Robert Richards received the B.S. degree from Ohio State University in 1957, the M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1959 and the Ph.D. in 1970 from Michigan State University. He joined the Department of Sociology in 1969 and was a faculty member in the Department until his death in 1983. He was deeply dedicated to the students he taught and was admired and appreciated by fellow faculty as a gifted colleague and a beloved friend. At his memorial service, faculty and students commented about his love of the discipline, his ability to stimulate them intellectually, his kindness, humility, humor, wit and ability with words and his wide-ranging interests and talents.

The Robert O. Richards Memorial Writing Award was established by his wife, Mary Richards, in 1984 to honor undergraduate sociology students who have written papers with excellence in quality of writing and soundness of sociological thought.
