Ph.D. Core Degree Requirements
Although responsibility for determining the student's course work resides with the POS committee, the Sociology Department has core courses that must be taken by all students. Following is a list of the core courses for the Ph.D. program. A graduate course taken elsewhere cannot substitute for the Ph.D. core requirements.
A minimum of 72 semester credits (including master's degree credits) is required for graduation.
Required Ph. D. Courses:
• Soc 511 (3 cr) Intermediate Research Methods
• Soc 591 (1 cr) Orientation to Sociology (Fall semester)
• Soc 506 (3 cr) Classical Sociological Theory and Challenges to the Canon (Spring semester)
• Soc 607 (3 cr) Contemporary Sociological Theory (Spring semester)
• Stat 404 (3 cr) Regression for Social and Behavioral Research (Fall semester)
• Soc 699 (8 cr) Dissertation Research
Advanced sociology course in an area other than student's two concentrations (3 cr)
• One advanced methods course in sociology methodology concentration (3cr):
° Soc 512 Sociological Measurement
° Soc 513 Qualitative Research Methods
° Soc 613 Advanced Theory Construction and Causal Modeling
No more than 12 credits of 590 (special topics) may be applied toward the Ph.D. degree requirements (72 credits).
