Community and Economic Development Surveys

These products are delivered through the Community Development – Data Information and Analysis Laboratory (CD-DIAL), where I am Professor-in-Charge.  Products include: (a) community attitude and satisfaction surveys; (b) household status surveys; (c) labor vacancy surveys; (d) workforce readiness surveys; and (e) skills gap surveys.

Economic Base Analysis

These products provide detailed information about key sectors of the local economy over time. Products include: (a) economic diversification and specialization studies; (b) analysis of key industry sectors; (c) retail trade analysis; (d) industry profiles; and (e) export analysis.

Economic and Fiscal Impact Analysis

These products estimate the direct, indirect and induced economic effects of some shock to the local economy. Impacts can be run at the county or regional level for over 500 industries. Products include: (a) economic impact of firm expansion or contraction; (b) tax credit and incentives analysis; (c) industry contribution analysis; and (d) impact of hypothetical firms for economic development planning.

Targeted Regional Economic Development

These products and services assist local and state officials in planning and targeting economic development efforts at particular industries, guided by economic or non-economic preferences. Products include: (a) identification of competitive industries; (b) industry and occupation "grades" weighted by development goal preferences; (c) supply-chain analysis; (d) customer base analysis; and (e) comprehensive industry targeting using a method that incorporates community preferences into the rankings.

Industry Cluster Analysis

Products include: (a) competitive industry clusters; (b) supply-chain clusters; and (c) labor-based clusters. Products can identify clusters located within the community, or how a community can participate in other clusters in nearby areas.

Workforce Analysis

These provide comprehensive workforce planning information targeted to state and local workforce investment boards (WIBs). Products include: (a) occupational outlooks and career "grades"; (b) workforce and skills gap analysis; (c) dislocated worker transition tools; (d) career skills clusters; and (e) labor/occupation mismatch analysis for industry targeting.

Demographic and Community Analysis

The products provide ad hoc demographic and community analysis of key topics. Demographic studies use detailed socioeconomic data that is at the sub-county level going back to 1970, permitting localized trend analysis over time.

Training

Trainings offered include: (a) applied regional economics - theory and concepts; (b) applied regional economics - data analysis; and (c) understanding data sources.
