Grading

There are a total of 400 points possible in the course, 40 points for assignments during  lecture, 130 points from 2 multiple choice tests during the semester (65 points each), 100 points for the comprehensive final exam, and 130 points assigned by your recitation instructor.  Only point totals for students who took all exams and completed all recitation assignments will be considered in calculating the final grading scale.  Your grade for the course will be based on your performance compared with other students who have the same recitation instructor.  The grading scale for students with the same recitation instructor will begin with the highest score and proceed as follows.  Remember the most extra credit points can increase your grade is by one bump, i.e. from a C to a C+ or B- to a B

    The highest 9% of scores   = A
    The next 8%                       = A-
    The next 8%                       = B+
    The next 10%                     = B
    The next 9%                       = B-
    The next 12%                     = C+
    The next 15%                     = C
    The next 12%                     = C-
    The next 6%                       = D+
    The next 6%                       = D
    The next 5%                       = F

Regardless of the distribution, if you earn 90% or more of the total points in the course, you will receive an A (regular or -) and with at least 60% of the points, you will pass the course.  Thus, no one has to fail the class, and everyone can receive an A.  Your recitation instructor will keep your grade records and handle exam results.  This is the person you should contact if you have any questions about your grade.  Examination scores will be posted on the course web page.
