Sociology 305: Social Psychology

Summer 2007

This course is designed to introduce you to the field of social psychology. Most broadly, social psychology can be thought of as the study of the interaction between individuals, groups, and society. While both sociologists and psychologists have been interested in social psychological questions, we will be focusing on sociological social psychology. We will begin by focusing on the individual - specifically, how individuals develop and come to think about themselves and the world around them. We will also be addressing individuals within groups - how individuals communicate and interact with others in a variety of different ways, including some "not so nice" ways. Lastly, we will be focusing on groups - interaction between individuals within groups as well as interaction between groups. Throughout the entire course, our focus will be on how the social context influences individuals and their interactions with others.
